Scroll — walk the night path

A five-chapter night walk
Rendered live in Three.js

I — The Gate

Three gates stand between the city and the quiet.

The climb begins under vermilion. Kasagi beams sweep upward like held breath, and each threshold you pass is a small agreement: the mountain decides the pace from here.

II — The Approach

A path remembers everyone who slows down for it.

Cedar and moss take the voices of the town away. Stone lanterns mark the turnings — unlit for a century, glowing tonight as if the mountain had been waiting for company.

III — The Stairs

One hundred and forty years of footsteps, lit the whole way up.

The flight rises through cold blue air. Ember-coloured windows of stone lanterns lean over the treads; the hall above holds its light close, and lets it go one step at a time.

IV — The Hall

Paper windows burn low, and the night agrees to keep them.

On the terrace the trees fall back. Shoji panels glow the colour of embers behind charred cypress, and the courtyard stones hold the warmth of a day that ended hours ago.

V — The Moon

The moon does not rise over the temple. The temple is built beneath it.

At the top of the walk the ridge opens west. Vermilion, enormous, patient — it crosses the roofline and settles over the valley, and stays long enough for you to stop counting steps.
